Here are some of my favorite movies from this year. I’m not going to say the same for the Oscars, but this category does award more originality and creativity than the main categories and these movies had that in spades. I included just about every Oscar movie-because, duh, they’re almost all really good-along with some other movies that you may have missed this year. Room could have gone wrong in so many ways, but he brings out simply tremendous performances in Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay. Ultimately, all I have to say is this: yes, Ex Machina is THAT good. Yes, better than Leo. Focus: Miles better than anything else Will Smith’s done in recent years and it’s so much fun watching him as a con man. A mad world (mad world) Donnie Darko's may be, but it's also one that continues to beguile and fascinate as new fans find themselves obsessed with uncovering its mysteries. I love showing this one to people. Just because these movies aren’t in the above group doesn’t mean I didn’t love them (that’s what happens when you’re making a best-of list!). Here’s the movies that I thought were simply terrific. Attending a movie during its opening weekend has the most impact on its success.
